Charnwood House in Coventry is owned by Methodist Homes Association, it provides 57 en-suite rooms with care facilities for dementia residents. MHA decided on a programme to create a new extension onto the existing facilities to provide five new en-suite bedrooms and a new lounge and communal lobby area, as well as the provision of a newly designed internal landscaped courtyard.
It was decided to engage on a programme of refurbishment to the existing residential wings and facilities.
Arden Construction was engaged to construct the extension, alterations and refurbishment of Charnwood House and to undertake the internal alterations and refurbishment of the existing Dementia Care Home.
The extension works comprised the demolition and alterations to the two ends of the existing building to allow the new extension to be constructed.
The internal alterations and refurbishment comprised taking down walls to provide a new quiet room, seating area and cleaners room; the existing corridor was refurbished with new internal doors and ironmongery and new finishes throughout; new wind catchers were installed with alterations to existing services and the roof walkway above together with alterations and making good the existing ceiling and roof.
The internal works included refurbishment to nine bedrooms and en-suites; to include the removal of floor coverings, sanitaryware, existing lighting, decorations, plumbing and electrical works and any fixtures and fittings.
We then also refurbished the beauty suite including, plumbing, electrics, decorations, flooring, supply and installation of new saloon equipment, refurbishment to the communal lounge including flooring and decorations, refurbishment of the reception area which included flooring, decorations and reconfiguration of a new quiet room and three of the existing corridors were refurbished including new flooring, removal of existing wall lighting, joinery and decorations.
Externally we had to strip out and dispose of the existing hard and soft landscaping before commencing external works comprising of a new hard and soft landscaping scheme with new bespoke features and a new planting scheme to the new internal courtyard together with the new drainage and alterations to the existing drainage systems to suit the new extension and courtyard.
During the construction of the extension we were also refurbishing the residential wings of the home, by phasing this activity we were able to minimise disruption to the absolute minimum for the residents.
A collaborative approach with all parties was critical to the success of this project, regular communications with key staff was essential weekly meetings were also held to accommodate the changing needs of the home.
Through the regular communications we were able to address any particular needs and collaborate on residents requirements especially in regards to ensuring safety.
All works were undertaken with Arden acting as Principal Contractor.
